On 5th April, 1915, the 2nd Cornwall Light Infantry battalion of 82 Brigade, 27th Division moved into trenches at Sanctuary Wood in the Ypres salient where they remained until relieved on 8th April. The battalion diary recorded that things were relatively quiet here during this time spent in the front line but there were some casualties on a daily basis one of whom was Gilbert Jordan who died from wounds on 7th April. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
